The Colonial Legacy That Europe and the USA Still Refuse to Face👊🏿👊🏾👊🏽👊🏽👊🏻👊
Europe and the USA cannot truly move forward until it first learns and accepts the full truth of its past…it’s colonial legacy
And I don’t mean just remembering dates and names, I mean sitting in the discomfort of what colonialism really was:
- A business built on Black bodies
- A system of violence, extraction, and dehumanization
- A legacy that still shapes global inequality today
The Ongoing Legacy of Colonialism
Europe & the Western countries needs to stop pretending this history is “over”, because the consequences are still happening right now. And let’s be honest: Europe is shifting backwards alongside the USA!
In the past 10 years, we’ve watched how systemic racism in Europe is rising:
- The rise of right-wing extremism in country after country
- More anti-immigrant rhetoric and laws
- Increased Islamophobia, anti-Black racism, and fear of “the other”
- A nostalgia for a time when Europe was on top and others were silent.
This is not progress. This is history trying to repeat itself, just with better marketing.
It’s not enough to “move on” First, they have to let go of the superiority complex.
Let go of the colonial mindset that still lives in their policies, media, and politics.
Let go of the idea that truth-telling is an attack.
As I continue to unlearn and learn, one thing becomes clearer:
They need to learn their history, in order to truly let go
- They need to learn their history in order to truly let go and move forward.
- Not to keep dragging the weight of their ancestors’ crimes into every law, border and ballot box.
And to STOP thinking they are better than people of color, while they rob everything from us. (I can’t even begin to tell you how much I’ve hated parts of myself… my lips, my bum, my skin, my hair, all of it, until recently.)
They mock it.
Steal it.
Rename it.
Sell it.
Taken from Bodies – through slavery, trafficking, and forced labor
Taken from Land – colonization, gentrification, forced relocation
Taken from Cultur – Music, dance, fashion, hairstyles, then repackaged as trends
Taken from Knowledge – African math systems, indigenous medicine, astronomy
Taken from History – Rewritten, erased, or whitewashed in textbooks
Taken from Food – Recipes and crops taken and claimed as “Western cuisine”
Taken fron Style & Beauty – Lips, hips, skin tones, braids, locks and more, mocked when Black, praised when white
Taken from Spirituality – Indigenous rituals demonized, then stolen for “wellness”
Taken from Language – suppressed in colonized countries, while slang is co-opted and commodified
Taken from Resistance – Radical movements like the civil rights, anti-colonialism, feminism, later whitewashed or co-opted
Taken fro Joy & Expression – constatly policed, ridiculed, or “toned down” for whtte comfort
Even taken PAIN – trauma becomes entertainment: documentaries, articles, and “inspiration porn” sold to white audience
They took it all and still, the majority think they’re “better”?
When will THEY start to take responsiblity and CORRECT themselves?
“You can’t heal what you refuse to name.” ~ Brené Brown
To those listening: start learning, start unlearning, and stop pretending! Only then will you get peace, and we get peace!
How the Europe and USA Colonial Legacy Still Hurts
The injustice we’re seeing today? It started with Europe, and was perfected by the USA.
Conquest became policy. Racism became law. And they called it “civilization.”
The world we live in today is built on Europe’s long history of systematic conquest.
Do I think it will ever change…NO….but do I hope it will…YES!
Without hope & dreams we have nothing!
I asked ChatGPT about the deep pain that still shapes our world, and it’s only getting worse. The answers hit hard. Curious?
