Let’s Talk About Spas

Norwegian version

You know how people rave about spas? The soothing music, hot tubs, and those magical hot stones that are supposed to change your life? Well, I’ve never really gotten the hype. Maybe it’s because I haven’t experienced enough spa days—or the “right” kind of spa days—to understand what makes everyone go bananas over it.

But yesterday, we went to a spa. It was a Christmas gift from my mother-in-law, and the day was set at Son Spa. After spending a full day there, one thing stood out loud and clear: the “aufguss” stole the show for me!

Wait, what’s aufguss?

First, let me set the record straight: aufguss is a sauna experience. Not just any sauna experience—this is a sauna on steroids, complete with steam, heat, and a host who knows how to put on a show. I’ll admit, I had no clue what I was getting into. The name itself sounded like something you’d want to avoid, but here I am, totally converted. 💦🔥

So, what exactly is aufguss? It’s a German word that means “to pour on.” It’s a 15-minute sauna session where the host pours water and ice mixed with essential oils over the heater. The steam spreads like a warm hug, and the host whips towels or fans around to direct the steam toward you. Add some music for atmosphere, and it’s like a mix of therapy and a rock concert.

Now for a bit of history: while the name “aufguss” is German, the concept has roots deeper than a spa menu. It’s thought to have originated from Finnish sauna culture (because of course, the Finns practically invented sauna life). The tradition of pouring water over hot stones for steam has been a Finnish staple for centuries. The Germans, however, took that basic idea and turned it into a theatrical experience with music, scents, and professional sauna “hosts.” It’s like taking your grandma’s simple soup recipe and turning it into a five-star dining experience.

And there you have it—a steamy cultural mashup that’s both soothing and a little dramatic. Would I do it again? Absolutely. Next time, I might even try to wield a towel like a pro. 😄

My Three Rounds of Aufguss Madness

We did three rounds of aufguss. By the third round, Lars—our amazing sauna host—offered a bonus round. I was already on the verge of melting, but when he said, “One last round,” I thought, why not?

It was during this round that I finally dared to jump into the cold water. Okay, “jump” might be a stretch—it was more like a quick “dip and dash” situation. But let me tell you, it was incredible. That shock of cold after being roasted alive in the sauna? It made me feel alive and a little crazy—in the best way possible.

I even did it three times, and when I watched the video later, I realized the water barely reached my shoulders. But who cares? For me, it was a victory. Without a doubt, the highlight of the entire spa day!

So yeah, aufguss is a sauna experience. And for me? It might just be what finally made me get the whole spa thing. 😉

The Food Was a Bonus

Let’s talk about the food. We had duck with red wine sauce (adjusted for my lactose intolerance), celery purée, and some greens. It was divine. There’s something about being served a meal while you’re in full zen mode (or at least trying to be) that feels extra luxurious.

We even got dressed for the meal—and thank goodness for that, because we were seated near a window, and it got a bit chilly. Note to self: next time, bring two sets of swimwear and four towels. But if all spa experiences come with food like this, I might finally start to understand why people love it.

But What About the Rest?

As for the rest of the spa—the hot tubs, the warm stones, and the idea of massages—I’m a bit more skeptical. Don’t get me wrong, lying there and relaxing sounds great, especially if you pair it with a hotel stay and make a whole event out of it. I can totally see why couples would find it romantic and cozy.

But for me? I think I’m more of a “cold water challenge and good food” type of person. At least until I try a full-on spa experience and maybe change my mind. 😉

What Did I Learn?

I think spa days are about finding what brings you joy. For some, it’s lying in silence in a warm room, just existing in the moment. For others (like me!), it’s the adrenaline rush of jumping into freezing water after being roasted in a sauna.

And the food—oh, the food! Or “earth’s gifts,” as they like to call it. It’s definitely a key part of the experience, especially when it’s as delicious as this (though I wouldn’t mind a bit more of it!).

So maybe I’ll give spas another shot. Or maybe I’ll just hunt down more places with aufguss and cold water challenges. Who knows? Maybe one day, I’ll turn into a full-blown spa enthusiast. 🤭

For now, though, I can confidently say this: the aufguss and the food were absolutely worth the trip.

What about you? What’s your favorite part of a spa day? Any tips for what I should try next time? 😊
